Some fragrances you can buy blind and be fine. These are not those. Every scent below is either famous enough to be oversold, bold enough to split a room, expensive enough to hurt, or quiet enough to be misjudged in the first ten minutes. All twelve are in the library in 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml. Wear one for a day before you decide.
The famous ones
You have seen them in every "top ten" video. The hype is real and so is the number of people who bought a bottle and never reached for it again. Smell them on your own skin, not on the internet's.
- Baccarat Rouge 540, Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Sweet, airy, enormous sillage. On some people it is magic, on others it is cotton candy all afternoon.
- Aventus, Creed. Pineapple, smoke and birch. The most-cloned men's fragrance of the century for a reason, and still worth confirming you like the real one.
- Santal 33, Le Labo. Leathery sandalwood with a papery dryness. Either you will feel like you are in the right coffee shop or like everyone else is.
The ones that split a room
Smoke, oud, big white florals and boozy tobacco. These are the scents people describe as "unforgettable" without saying whether that is good. Only a decant tells you which side you are on.
- Tobacco Vanille, Tom Ford. Pipe tobacco soaked in dried fruit and vanilla. Glorious in December, heavy in July.
- Carnal Flower, Frédéric Malle. Tuberose turned up to full volume. The best in its category, and a note that some people cannot be near.
- Oud Satin Mood, Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Rose, vanilla and a smooth, polished oud. Rich enough that two sprays is a lot.
The expensive vanillas
Vanilla is the note skin chemistry changes most. The same juice reads as creamy on one person, boozy on the next and plasticky on a third. At these prices you want to know which one you are before the bottle arrives.
- Vanille Planifolia Extrait 21, Guerlain. Dark, resinous, almost savoury vanilla. One of the priciest things in the library and one of the best.
- Spiritueuse Double Vanille, Guerlain. Rum, incense and a soft smoky vanilla. The grown-up gourmand.
- Vanille 44, Le Labo. A city exclusive, dry and woody rather than sweet. Not the vanilla most people expect, which is exactly why you sample it.
The quiet skin scents
These seem faint in the first five minutes and then quietly follow you around all day. Judge them at hour six, not at the counter.
- Another 13, Le Labo. Ambroxan and a clean, slightly metallic musk. Smells like nothing and then like your skin on a good day.
- Molecule 01, Escentric Molecules. A single material, Iso E Super. You will stop smelling it on yourself and other people will not.
- Gris Charnel, BDK. Fig, black tea, sandalwood and a soft vetiver. Intimate, warm, and much easier to live with than it is to describe.
How to sample properly
- Two sprays on skin, not on a strip. Wrist and the inside of the elbow.
- Do not smell it again for an hour. The opening lies.
- Wear it through a normal day. Note how it behaves after lunch and at the end of the afternoon.
- Repeat on a different day. Weather and what you ate both change it.
- If you reach for the decant a third time without thinking, that is your answer.
